Cigna eyes Medicare Advantage expansion: 3 things to know

Cigna sees a major business opportunity in expanding its Medicare Advantage offerings in coming years, according to Forbes contributor Bruce Japsen.

Three things to know:

1. Cigna CEO David Cordani told attendees at the J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference in San Francisco Jan. 7 that the company is "well positioned for growth in existing and new Medicare Advantage markets," according to company slides from the conference.

2. In addition, 85 percent of Cigna's Medicare Advantage customers are serviced through value-based care arrangements, according to the slides.

"Those are very important in terms of how our model works: hand in glove with high-performing physician organizations and integrated hospital systems for the benefit of our M.A. customers," Mr. Cordani said, as cited by Forbes.

3. Cigna's rivals, Aetna, Anthem, Humana and UnitedHealth Group, are also expanding their Medicare Advantage lines into new geographic regions. The Medicare market is growing rapidly, with more than 10,000 Americans aging into the Medicare population each day, according to Forbes.
