Cigna CEO David Cordani: Public-private partnerships hold more promise than 'Medicare for All'

Elevating public-private partnerships like Medicare Advantage and managed Medicaid is the best way to answer Americans' call to overhaul the healthcare system, according to Cigna CEO David Cordani.

Speaking at the AHIP Institute & Expo in Nashville, Tenn., June 19, Mr. Cordani said making public-private partnerships more effective is the solution to "a real call from a societal standpoint for more value and more peace of mind to be delivered to individuals" in the healthcare system.

Mr. Cordani, who runs an insurer with operations in 30 countries, said when it comes to adding more value into the U.S. healthcare system, the conversation needs to be shifted from who pays for the sickness intervention to who drives engagement through a public-private partnership focused on the individual.

"I believe that the public-private partnership like Medicare Advantage, like smart evolution of innovation of managed Medicaid programs, like empowering employers to evolve the programs that work for them based on their cultures … have more promise than a single, one-size-fits-all solution," he said.

Both payers and providers have spoken out against "Medicare for All" proposals. Most recently, the American Medical Association voted against supporting a single-payer system.
