Centene buys majority stake in Spanish hospital: 4 things to know

Centene Corp. now owns 89 percent of Madrid-based University Hospital of Torrejón de Ardoz, the health insurer said Jan. 2.

Here are four things to know:

1. The Ribera Salud Group in Spain, which Centene owns 50 percent of, will manage the hospital. The Ribera Salud Group ran the hospital from its 2011 opening until November 2012.

2. Under the deal, Centene bought stake in the Torrejón Salud company, the concessionaire of the University Hospital of Torrejón de Ardoz, from two Spanish healthcare companies: Sanitas and Asisa.

3. The University Hospital of Torrejón serves about 150,000 people across several services and facilities.

4. Michael F. Neidorff, chairman and CEO for Centene, said in a press release that the company is "pleased to be expanding this growing and successful enterprise in Spain. The purchase of the University Hospital of Torrejón is an important addition to our international portfolio."
