California governor faces single-payer plan pressure

As California Gov. Gavin Newsom's position remains contentious, many looking to keep him in office are looking for state insurance reform in return.

Healthcare unions, including the National Union of Healthcare Workers and the California Nurses Association, are pressing Mr. Newsom on his 2018 campaign promise to deliver a single-payer healthcare system, according to California Healthline. Blue Shield of California and the California Medical Association also have expressed their discontent previously, the publication reported.

Change could come as early as 2022, as some unions are calling on Mr. Newsom to sign on to legislation to create a single-payer system as early as possible.

However, he faces a tall order with the change, as a $400 billion price tag and tax increases stand in the way. He also has asked President Joe Biden for permissions to create a single-payer program, as federal red tape remains a roadblock
