Question: What are three concerns for payers in 2020?

Ceci Connolly: (1) Uncertainty surrounding the future of CMS telehealth flexibilities and how long they will be extended. (2) Increases in the number of uninsured and Medicaid enrollees, in addition to decreases in commercial enrollment. (3) Maintaining availability and accessibility of primary care providers offering affordable and appropriate care for consumers.

Q: What's one way the pandemic has changed the role of the payer?

CC: The pandemic has further exposed flaws in fee-for-service and more providers are working with payers to enter into value-based contracts. Additionally, payers are doubling down on their efforts to address the unique social needs of their communities, especially for vulnerable populations who may be deferring needed medical care.

Q: What is the most underrated trait of the best leaders?

CC: Decisiveness. At any time, but especially during crises such as the current pandemic, indecision can cripple an organization. Employees want a clear understanding of the situation, the challenges and what we are going to do. Starting with a vision and mission provides the North Star for those decisions. And not every decision will be perfect. But with humility and agility, a good leader will recognize that and course correct with the next decision.
