Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina is focusing on strategies that use machine learning and artificial intelligence to share patient data with providers and other healthcare professionals, according to The Herald Sun.
The insurer's chief data and analytics officer, Patrick Getzen, spoke about how the health insurer is prioritizing safely sharing large amounts of patient data with providers to help them better treat and prevent illness.
"We have data that goes back decades," Mr. Getzen said during the North Carolina CEO Forum Nov. 5, as reported by The Herald Sun. "It is robust and longitudinal. ... We can leverage insights in ways we haven't before."
One way BCBSNC hopes to share data is through its Blue Premier program. Under that program, debuted in January, five of the largest health systems in North Carolina agreed to share risk, tying physician and hospital payments to the value of services provided. Blue Premier allows BCBSNC to share patient data with the providers, with hopes that doing so will help them eliminate redundant care.
Mr. Getzen alluded to two forthcoming partnerships that will allow BCBSNC's data to be shared more freely, according to the report. News of the partnerships comes after the fallout of BCBSNC's deal with Cambia Health Solutions, which would have linked BCBSNC with data of Regence-branded BCBS plans in Oregon, Utah, Idaho and Washington.
