BCBS of Michigan expands risk-based contracts to 14 providers

Seven more healthcare organizations agreed to share financial risk with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan under a value-based payment initiative.

The insurer said Feb. 24 it is expanding its risk-sharing payment program "Blueprint for Affordability" to include providers throughout the entire state of Michigan. The model, which debuted in December 2019 with seven provider partners including Ascension Michigan in Warren and Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, will now include 14 providers.

Blueprint for Affordability sets annual cost and clinical quality targets for the providers. If providers stay below the cost target and meet quality metrics, they will receive additional payment from BCBS. Alternatively, if metrics are missed, providers could have to pay BCBS the amount that was overspent.

All the participants are listed below, with the first seven being the newest members to join Blueprint for Affordability:

  • Affinia Health Network (Muskegon)
  • Genesys PHO (Burton)
  • Great Lakes OSC (Midland)
