Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts is standing behind one of its board members after multiple union groups protested for her resignation outside the insurer's office Oct. 10, according to the Boston Herald.
The board member, Marcy Reed, is the leader of energy provider National Grid in Massachusetts. In June, National Grid locked out its unionized gas workers in Massachusetts after the company and steel unions could not reach an agreement, according to MassLive.
Joe Kirylo, president of the Boston Gas Union, Local 12003, said, "We feel people who work for Blue Cross Blue Shield should feel for people who are ill." He also criticized Ms. Reed for "cutting off our healthcare."
Amy McHugh, a spokesperson for BCBS of Massachusetts, said in a statement to the Boston Herald: "Our Board is comprised of talented and experienced professionals who bring a diversity of perspectives and includes both management and labor leaders. Marcy Reed has served on our board since 2016 and brings the important voice of employers to our board discussions. ... We hope the two sides will be able to reach a mutually satisfactory agreement."
