BCBS Association, UnitedHealth end trademark feud

The Blue Cross Blue Shield Association and UnitedHealth Group settled a trademark dispute that concerned an acronym used by both organizations, according to court documents.

Blue Cross Blue Shield Association and UnitedHealth had been fighting over their use of the term "HPN." Blue Cross Blue Shield Association uses "HPN" as shorthand for "high-performance network," and UnitedHealth uses it for "Health Plan of Nevada."

In April 2020, Blue Cross Blue Shield Association filed a preemptive lawsuit against UnitedHealth, claiming that UnitedHealth had threatened litigation over the acronym use.

On June 16, the organizations asked a district judge in Minnesota to sign off on a confidential settlement agreement to end the dispute. Terms of the agreement weren't disclosed.
