Anthem's profit rises 17.5%, revenue beats expectations: 5 key points

Health insurer Anthem reported a better-than-expected quarterly profit for the second quarter of fiscal year 2015.

Here are five things to know about Anthem's second-quarter financials.

1. The health insurer reported its revenue increased to $20.02 billion in the second quarter of FY 2015, up 8.3 percent from the same period of last year. That figure topped analysts' expectations of $19.63 billion in second-quarter revenue, according to Reuters.

2. Anthem has experienced strong growth in its government Medicaid and Medicare businesses. As of June 30, the company had nearly 5.8 million Medicaid members, up from 4.8 million a year ago.

3. Anthem ended the second quarter of FY 2015 with net income of $859.1 million, up from $731.1 million for the same period a year ago.

4. Based on its second-quarter results, Anthem expects its 2015 adjusted net income to be more than $10 per share, up from its previous forecast of more than $9.90 per share.

5. Anthem's updated forecast reflects a slowdown in share buybacks related to its purchase of Cigna, according to Reuters. Last week, Anthem entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Cigna in a cash and stock transaction valued at $54.2 billion.
