Anthem fined, ordered to refund Colorado members for overcharges

Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield will pay a fine and refund $1.3 million to disabled Colorado members after overcharging them for supplemental Medicare policies, the Colorado Division of Insurance ordered July 3.

A recent market review conducted by the division found that since 2006, Anthem — operating as Rocky Mountain Hospital and Medical Service in Colorado — overcharged disabled members for supplemental Medicare plans after they turned 65. About 219 members paid higher premiums than they should have and will be notified and given refunds in the next month.

Anthem will also reinstate coverage for members who gave up their plans. In addition, the insurer faces a $100,000 fine from the department.
