Aetna raises $13B in bond sale to back Humana purchase

Hartford, Conn.-based Aetna sold $13 billion of new bonds Thursday to fund its acquisition of Louisville, Ky.-based Humana.

Investors saw the bond sale as a sign the transaction is on track with antitrust regulators, but the deal's closure is still not guaranteed, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The Aetna-Humana deal is under intense scrutiny from antitrust regulators, as the transaction comes alongside the proposed merger of Indianapolis-based Anthem and Hartford, Conn.-based Cigna. If the two transactions go through, the health insurance landscape drastically changes to one with three key payers instead of five.

Aetna reiterated Thursday that it expects to complete the deal with Humana later this year.
