ACA exchange enrollment down approximately 60%, when considering shorter sign up period

More than 504,000 individuals enrolled in a health plan on HealthCare.gov during the fourth week of open enrollment 2018, according to CMS.

Cumulatively, approximately 2.8 million enrolled in exchange-based coverage since Nov. 1, when open enrollment began. While this is outpacing the 2.1 million people who enrolled in an exchanged-based health plan during the first four weeks of open enrollment 2017, that enrollment period was twice as long.

Open enrollment 2017 ran from Nov. 1, 2016, through Jan. 31, 2017. The 2018 open enrollment period began Nov. 1, 2017, and runs through Dec. 15. Therefore, this year's open enrollment is about two-thirds done. Compared to when open enrollment 2017 was about two-thirds done — during which more than 8 million individuals signed up for coverage — this year's open enrollment is down about 60 percent.

It is important to note there is usually an increase in enrollees near the end of the open enrollment period, so it is difficult to predict how this year will stack up to last year until the period closes.
