Maryland's Affordable Care Act exchange, Maryland Health Connection, has introduced a new mobile app aimed at helping people enroll in insurance coverage using their electronic devices, reports The Baltimore Sun.

Here are five things to know about the app.

1. The free "Enroll MHC" app is available in the App Store for iOS users and the Google Play Store for Android users.

2. MHC said the app allows consumers to apply, compare prices and ratings of various plans, log in to view their notices and upload documents for verification if needed through the camera on their smartphone or tablet.

3. Additionally, the app will show preliminary eligibility for federal tax credits and cost-sharing for private plans offered on Maryland's health insurance marketplace, along with eligibility for Medicaid and the Maryland Children's Health Program, according to MHC.

4. MHC officials expect full application features to be available by late October on the app.

5. The app now includes 2016 plans, but will be loaded with 2017 plans in early October before enrollment opens Nov. 1. Dec. 15 is the deadline for 2017 coverage to begin on Jan. 1, 2017. Open enrollment for 2017 coverage will end Jan. 31.
