5 payer moves targeting social determinants of health

Five recent efforts health insurers made to address social determinants of health:

  1. The Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, Humana and Centene were among payers and healthcare providers to voice their support for the Social Determinants Accelerator Act in a July 6 letter. The act would create a council on social determinants of health, provide grants to support evidence-based health services and promote the exchange of cross-sector information.

  2. Magellan Health collaborated with AI platform mPulse Mobile on a six-week pilot program that addressed social isolation and loneliness during the COVID-19 pandemic.

  3. Humana CEO Bruce Broussard and AHIP CEO Matt Eyles wrote in a July 9 op-ed article that stronger data is key to addressing social barriers and healthcare inequities.

  4. UnitedHealth is using predictive analytics to address social determinants of health for some of its employer-sponsored plans, the company said July 8. The program uses claim data to predict which members will need support with such things as healthy food or housing.

  5. Clover announced plans to offer grocery delivery and benefits to Medicare Advantage members through retailers such as Walmart in an effort to address social determinants of health. Humana and Centene have offered grocery benefits since 2018.
