11 states + DC with lowest individual health insurance competition

In 2017, about 16.6 million Americans purchased individual health insurance coverage, according to a report from America's Health Insurance Plans.

That same year, Alaska's individual health insurance competition was the least competitive, with the largest health insurer covering 99 percent of the market, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation.

Here are 11 states and the District of Columbia with the least competitive individual markets in 2017:

Alaska — largest insurer has 99 percent market share

Alabama — largest insurer has 98 percent market share

Wyoming — largest insurer has 97 percent market share

North Carolina, South Carolina — largest insurer has 96 percent market share

Oklahoma — largest insurer has 94 percent market share

District of Columbia — largest insurer has 85 percent market share

North Dakota — largest insurer has 82 percent market share

Vermont — largest insurer has 80 percent market share

Kentucky, Maryland, West Virginia —largest insurer has 78 percent market share
