The FDA has awarded a contract to a nonprofit organization to create a tool to assess medication safety practices in healthcare settings, from the time of patient admission to discharge from the healthcare facility.
The Institute for Safe Medication Practices, a nonprofit organization focused on preventing medication errors, will create a self-assessment tool that healthcare professionals in hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers and other surgical sites can use to evaluate their efforts in preventing medication errors among patients during their time in the facility.
The perioperative self-assessment tool is slated to be launched in September.
The tool will help healthcare organizations examine their medication safety practices, identify opportunities for improvement and compare their experiences with similar organizations.
