Children’s hospitals launch national ‘Safety Watch’

The Children’s Hospital Association’s Child Health Patient Safety Organization has developed a new “Safety Watch” initiative to help pediatric clinicians identify healthcare risks and prevent harm.

Each year, millions of children experience preventable harm events in hospitals and other healthcare settings. Safety Watch will alert pediatric providers of immediate safety threats, emerging concerns and ongoing risks based on insights from nearly 60 member children’s hospitals and the latest research.

A March 6th alert highlighted three emerging safety risks:

  • Unrecognized clinical deterioration
  • Pressure injuries
  • Discharge medication errors

Safety Watch will also provide actionable steps for healthcare organizations to prevent harm, based on shared learnings from the Child Health Patient Safety Organization. The group represents the only federally-registered patient safety organization nationwide dedicated solely to children’s hospitals.

“Children’s healthcare comes with unique challenges, which is why we’re excited to bring the expertise of our member hospitals to support clinicians in providing the best possible care to children across healthcare settings,” Aisha Furbach, vice president of child health quality at CHA, said in a March 10 news release. “With the Safety Watch, we are equipping our entire healthcare system to safely care for children.”
