The report collected maternal mortality rates for 2023 based on data from the National Vital Statistics System. Maternal mortality rates were then analyzed based on age and race.
Here are five things to know:
1. The overall maternal mortality rate dropped from 22.3 per 100,000 live births in 2022 to 18.6 in 2023.
2. Black non-Hispanic women were the only race to see an increase in maternal mortality rate, though the increase was not statistically significant.
3. The maternal mortality rate for Black women was 50.3 deaths per 100,000 live births, compared to 14.5 deaths for White women, 12.4 for Hispanic women and 10.7 for Asian women.
4. Mortality rates declined significantly for women ages 25-39 and for women 40 and older.
5. The mortality rate of women older than 40 was nearly five times higher than the rate for women younger than 25.
