UPMC Horizon to close ICU at Pennsylvania hospital

Alia Paavola -

UPMC Horizon will close the intensive care unit at its Greenville, Pa.-based hospital Feb. 1, according to The Sharon Herald.

Hospital officials cited a dramatic decrease in demand for intensive-care services as the reason for the closure.

UPMC Horizon's Greenville hospital will keep its emergency room open. Any patient needing ICU care will be transferred to UPMC Horizon-Shenango Valley hospital in Farrell, Pa. location or to a Pittsburgh-based UPMC hospital.

Lisa Lombardo, senior manager of UPMC public relations, said that none of the employees at the hospital will be laid off because of the closure.

"Nobody is being displaced,’’ Ms. Lombardo told The Sharon Herald.  "There are plenty of positions open at [UPMC Horizon] Greenville, [UPMC] Shenango … and other UPMC affiliates. We are confident everyone will land a job with UPMC if they wish to."
