Chicago-based Sinai Health System and University of Chicago Medicine will delay their push for approval for a Level 1 trauma center on the southwest side of Chicago, according to Crain's Chicago Business.
Health system leaders blamed time-consuming data analysis for the postponement, according to the report.
Sinai Health System and U of C Medicine announced in September plans to open a new trauma center at HolyCrossHospital after years of protest by healthcare advocates.
Activists have long-called on U of C Medicine to re-open its vacated adult trauma center, arguing the three-hospital system hasn't done enough for patients on the south side of Chicago. U of C Medicine responded by giving Sinai a one-time payment of $40 million to renovate Holy Cross' emergency department.
Sinai and U of C Medicine originally planned to present the trauma center proposal on Thursday to a committee consisting of leaders from six Chicago Level 1 centers.
The presentation will likely occur at the next committee meeting scheduled for March, chairman of Mount Sinai Hospital's surgery department Gary Merlotti, MD, told Crain's.
