Patient shoots physician at Florida hospital, authorities say

A patient shot and wounded a physician at West Palm Beach (Fla.) VA Medical Center on the evening of Feb. 27, according to NBC News.

The suspect, a double amputee in a wheelchair, opened fire with a handgun as he was being taken into the emergency room, authorities said. The physician, who has not been identified, was shot in the neck while trying to subdue the patient, according to The New York Times.

The physician was transported to another hospital for care and has been released.

A hospital spokesperson told NBC News the facility has been secured and the incident would not affect appointments and procedures scheduled for Feb. 28.
