Ohio State Wexner Medical Center in Columbus plans to open an inpatient hospice unit at its University Hospital campus this fall.
Four things you need to know:
1. The 12-bed unit will offer symptom control, spiritual support and additional support groups to hospice patients across the health system.
"When our cancer patients transition from curative to supportive care, the new inpatient hospice unit will be there to address their medical, nursing, emotional, social and spiritual needs," said Kris Kipp, executive director of The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center-Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solve Research Institute.
2. The unit will staff various end-of-life experts, including physicians, nurses, social workers and pain management specialists
3. OSU Wexner will tap Hospice of Central Ohio to manage the inpatient hospice unit.
4. Families will have 24-7 access to visit their loved ones at the unit.
