Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic will stop providing surgical services at two of its Minnesota hospitals, according to The Mankato Free Press.
The system will end the services at Mayo Clinic-Waseca and Mayo Clinic-St. James next year.
The decision is a result of low patient volumes for surgeries at the two hospitals. Mayo said the Waseca site had a 10 percent surgical utilization rate and St. James had 5 percent utilization rate.
Two nurses and two surgical technicians will lose their jobs, according to the publication. They can apply to other open jobs in the health system.
"Mayo Clinic and rural healthcare organizations across the country are faced with these kinds of challenges as the healthcare landscape and needs of patients shift," a Mayo spokesperson told the Free Press. "We must address these challenges proactively with the long-term future of rural healthcare as the primary consideration."
