Inaccurate report of possible gunman sends police rushing to UPMC Susquehanna; hospital placed on lockdown

A false report of a man firing gun shots at Williamsport, Pa.-based UPMC Susquehanna caused police to rush to the facility Wednesday morning, reports the Sun Gazette.

A dispatcher alerted local police of a "report of shots fired at the hospital" and said there were "multiple reports of callers contacting 911 of a possible shooter," according to court records cited by the Sun Gazette.

While there was no shooter and no shots were fired at the hospital, an 18-year-old was arrested for punching and kicking his pregnant girlfriend in a public area on the third floor of the medical center at 10:00 a.m. Neither of the people involved were patients.

Out of an abundance of caution, the hospital was placed on lockdown for about 45 minutes. Normal operations have resumed.

"There was an immediate staff response to the incident," Tyler Wagner, the hospital's communication specialist, told the Sun Gazette. "The region of the building in which the incident occurred, including the emergency department, was immediately placed on lockdown and there was a police response to the facility."

No details were released regarding where the erroneous reports of a possible gunman at the hospital originated.
