Alia Paavola -

Washington, D.C.-based Howard University Hospital will reopen its inpatient wing in partnership with Washington-D.C.-based Unity Health Care, to expand access to obstetric services in the area, according to the Washington Business Journal.

Under the deal announced Monday, the reopened wing will bring 11 new obstetrics inpatient rooms, an operating room and a delivery room to the hospital.

In addition, 35 new nurses were hired to staff the new wing.

The changes are expected to increase Howard University Hospital's capacity from 900 to 2,000 deliveries annually.

The announcement comes after the Washington D.C. Department of Health closed the obstetrics unit at Washington, D.C.-based United Medical Center and Washington, D.C.-based Providence Health System announced it would also cease obstetrics services.
