Chambersburg Hospital to open NICU: 4 things to know

Kelly Gooch -

Chambersburg (Pa.) Hospital, part of Summit Health, plans to open a Level II newborn intensive care unit within its family birthing services.

Here are four things to know about the new unit.

1. With the new NICU, babies born as early as 32 weeks gestation or babies with unexpected medical complications will be able to receive treatment at Chambersburg Hospital for the first time.

2. A neonatologist will work with specially trained nurses and staff in the NICU.

3. Pat O'Donnell, president and CEO of Summit Health, said in a news release the new NICU will allow the hospital to care for these babies close to home. He added, "We want local families to know we are here for them in the event their newborn may need a little extra care."

4. The new unit will open this January.
