CDC offers surge capacity resource for hospitals amid COVID-19 spikes

The CDC has issued a guidance for health systems overwhelmed by COVID-19 patient surges.

The guidance aims to help healthcare facilities and emergency medical planners improve surge capacity and resource allocation during the pandemic.

The document outlines how to identify relief healthcare facilities that can accept patient transfers or share extra resources. The resource also details how to establish and use medical operation coordination cells, which are groups of medical operations experts at the local, state or federal level that can help coordinate patient transfers.

The latest guidance comes as many hospitals in such hard-hit states as Texas and Florida struggle to find available beds for COVID-19 patients.
