California physician group with 5,300 patients closes with no notice

A neurologist group in Pismo Beach, Calif., that serves more than 5,300 patients abruptly closed in late November, according to the San Luis Obispo Tribune.

Patients of CoastNeuro, a four-physician group, found out about the office's closure by a sign on the door or a recorded message they received when calling the office. A staff member told KSBY News that employees were only given one day's notice that the office was closing.

The physicians said they had to close CoastNeuro after their office manager, who also served as a patient care advocate and infusion nurse resigned.

"The terms of his resignation left us with three business days notice to identify and train a replacement," David Filippi, MD, one of CoastNeuro's physicians, wrote in an email to the San Luis Obispo Tribune. "We were not able to succeed in that, and more importantly, after prolonged discussion we did not believe it was possible to continue operating our clinic and provide adequate patient care without someone in the role of office manager and patient advocate."

Three of CoastNeuro's physicians are opening a new clinic in January under San Francisco-based Dignity Health's Pacific Central Coast Health Centers network, according to the San Luis Obispo Tribune.

"The details of this transition are being finalized," reads a notice on CoastNeuro's website. "As soon as possible, we will provide information about how to enroll in the new neurology clinic."
