Baystate Health to close underutilized ICUs in Massachusetts

Kelly Gooch -

Baystate Health plans to close intensive care units at Baystate Noble Hospital in Westfield, Mass., and Baystate Wing Hospital in Palmer, Mass., according to masslive.com.

The Springfield, Mass.-based system told the publication that six ICU beds at each hospital will be converted to lower-level, less expensive medical-surgical use..

Inpatient pediatric care has not been provided at Baystate Noble Hospital for about a decade, and Baystate Health has also requested an update to the license for inpatient beds, spokesperson Shelly Hazlett told Becker's.

The health department has scheduled hearings regarding the ICU shutdown and closure of pediatric beds at Baystate Noble, as well as the proposed closure of the Baystate Wing Hospital ICU.

Ms. Hazlett said no layoffs are planned as a result of the closures.

She added that the changes are primarily due to underutilization, as each of the intensive care units has four patients a day, on average.
