5 Statistics on Healthcare Utilization in 2013

The IMS Institute for Healthcare Informatics has released a report analyzing healthcare costs and utilization in 2013. According to the report, overall utilization of healthcare increased slightly in 2013. The following are statistics on the increase in healthcare utilization, excerpted from the report.

  • The number of patient office visits increased 2.7 percent, the first increase in four years, though visits are still 8 percent lower than in 2008.
  • Scheduled inpatient admissions grew by 10.5 percent.
  • Emergency department hospital admission decreased 14.6 percent.
  • All types of hospital admissions grew 2.6 percent.
  • Outpatient visits increased by 13 million.

In addition, ED day visits increased among all payer groups, though average visits per patient decreased slightly for government-insured patients.
