Telehealth pediatric visits more likely to rate 5 stars when parents get antibiotics, study finds

When providers prescribe antibiotics during pediatric telemedicine visits, they are more likely to receive a five-star rating from the child's parents, according to a study published in Pediatrics.

For the study, researchers analyzed encounter data from a direct-to-consumer telemedicine platform. They examined data for 12,842 virtual consultations with pediatric patients who received care for respiratory tract infections.

They found that providers prescribed antibiotics in 55 percent of the consultations. The provider was more likely to receive a five-star rating from the parent when an antibiotic was prescribed.

Although pediatricians prescribed antibiotics at a lower rate than physicians in other specialties during telemedicine visits, their satisfaction scores were higher.
