New York City hospital pilots noise reduction program

Bronx, N.Y.-based St. Barnabas Hospital created a pilot program to help lower noise throughout the facility, beginning in its three-north unit, according to News 12.

One part of the noise reduction program is the Sound Ear, a device that hangs in the hallway to keep staff aware of their noise levels. If noise reaches a certain level, a red light flashes to alert the staff. The hospital also implemented quiet hours between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. and began handing patients relaxation kits that include an eye mask and ear plugs.

After a few months of the program, hospital officials said they already see improved patient satisfaction scores and will soon decide if they want to expand the program to other units.
