Financial rewards tied to risk reduction improve patient engagement most, survey shows

Most clinicians and executives believe that financial rewards tied to risk reduction are the best strategy to engage patients in their health goals, according to an NEJM Catalyst patient engagement survey.

The online survey polled members of the NEJM Catalyst Insights Council, of which 607 completed the survey. Forty-nine percent of respondents were clinicians, 27 percent were healthcare executives and 24 percent were clinical leaders.

The respondents were asked to rank the top three activities that were the most effective for patient engagement, when linked to financial rewards. Their responses were :

• Risk reduction (for example, smoking cessation): 56 percent
• Completing preventative screenings: 49 percent
• Promoting fitness and nutrition: 35 percent
• Health monitoring (for example, blood glucose levels): 31 percent
• Completing health assessment surveys: 30 percent
• Participating in health promotion programs: 23 percent
• Attending primary care visits: 17 percent
• Meeting health benchmarks and targets (for example, blood pressure): 16 percent
• Improving medication adherence: 14 percent
• Prenatal/pregnancy-related care: 12 percent
