Financial incentives from employers motivates healthy behaviors best, survey finds

Financial rewards to motivate healthy patient behaviors are most effective when they come from employers, according to an NEJM Catalyst Insights Council survey.

NEJM Catalyst surveyed 607 council members on patient engagement via an online poll in January. Forty-nine percent of respondents were clinicians, 27 percent were healthcare executives and 24 percent were clinical leaders.

The survey asked respondents to assess how effective financial rewards are at motivating patients to reach health goals, based on which stakeholder is offering them.

Respondents said health goals were most effective when coming from employers (83 percent) and least effective from social media (36 percent).

Financial rewards from payers were deemed second-most effective (78 percent), followed by health and wellness companies (57 percent), and family or friends (46 percent).
