Most glaucoma clinic patients found EHR-linked reminders useful for medication adherence, study shows

Patient medication reminders via an EHR resulted in good uptake among patients at a tertiary glaucoma clinic, according to a study published in JAMA Ophthalmology.

Researchers conducted a prospective, cross-sectional study involving 100 patients at a university-based glaucoma clinic from April 2017 to January 2018. For the study, a web-based application was added to the EHR patient portal that allowed patients to configure text and call reminders for their glaucoma medications. Patients were surveyed before and after they configured reminders.

Of the 100 participants, 94 ultimately configured reminders, of whom 89 completed follow-up.

At the follow-up, researchers found 74 percent of participants found the reminders useful, 15 percent were neutral and 11 percent found them not useful. Around 81 percent of participants had help configuring reminders.
