Parham Doctors' Hospital: Hip replacements trending younger — 4 details

Angie Stewart -

Hip arthritis and disease is becoming more common in younger patients, according to Matt Dobzyniak, MD, an orthopedic surgeon interviewed by local news affiliate CBS 6 TV.

Four details:

1. The average age of patients needing a hip replacement has decreased, according to Dr. Dobzyniak of Richmond, Va.-based Parham Doctors' Hospital.

2. It's becoming more common for physicians to use the anterior approach to hip replacement, as opposed to posterior or lateral approaches, which enables faster recovery, Dr. Dobzyniak said.

3. Hip replacement surgery at Parham Doctors' Hospital typically takes one hour. Patients are usually discharged within 24 hours.

4. Dr. Dobzyniak performed one of his first outpatient hip replacements on patient Laura Fischer, who suffered from arthritis in her hip joint.
