Opposition doesn't stop plans for 60-bed orthopedic hospital in Ohio

Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center is moving forward with a flagship orthopedic hospital in Fairlawn, Ohio, despite community opposition, Akron.com reports.

Five details:

1. The Fairlawn Planning Commission initially approved a conditional-use permit and preliminary site plan for the 60-bed hospital on May 10, 2018, but it was appealed by Crystal Shores Homeowners Association members.

2. Residents said the project failed to satisfy several conditional-use requirements and took issue with plans to increase the building's height by nearly 15 feet. Including 10 feet of mechanical equipment and screening on top, the hospital will be over 59 feet tall.

3. In April, a Summit County Common Pleas Court judge ruled the planning commission didn't have substantial evidence to say the proposed hospital's height would be compatible with surrounding areas. The judge ordered the case to be remanded to the commission.

4. The Fairlawn Planning Commission unanimously reapproved the plans May 31, after nearly four hours of arguments for and against the project. Akron, Ohio-based Crystal Clinic representatives at the meeting said the providers have been "outstanding citizens and residents for nearly 30 years."

5. If approved by the Fairlawn City Council, the hospital would have 12 operating rooms and open in summer 2021.
