San Antonio, Texas-based Metropolitan Methodist Hospital renamed its robotic surgical suites in memory of Naji Tanios Kayruz, MD, who was killed Feb. 4 by an alleged drunk driver, the San Antonio Express-News reports.
Dr. Kayruz was a general and robotic surgeon who practiced family medicine. He would have turned 59 on April 4.
Melissa Peoples, 48, was arrested on charges including intoxication manslaughter in connection with Dr. Karuz's death. She allegedly struck Dr. Kayruz, who was riding his bicycle, with her SUV.
Dr. Kayruz attended medical school in Lebanon before moving to the United States in 1984. He met his wife of 25 years while they were both working at Southwest General Hospital in San Antonio.
Metropolitan Methodist Hospital, which is co-owned by Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare and San Antonio-based Methodist Healthcare Ministries, dedicated its robotic surgical suites to Dr. Kayruz during a ceremony.
"I will miss him greatly. He was a great doc, a great friend and I trusted him totally," Metropolitan Methodist Chief of Staff John Etlinger, MD, said at the ceremony. "He will always be a part of this hospital."
