Ascension Saint Thomas doubles down on spine cases with new institute — 4 things to know

Angie Stewart -

Saint Thomas Midtown Hospital opened a 27,000-square-foot center dedicated to spine surgeries this month in Nashville, Tenn., the Nashville Business Journal reports.

Four takeaways:

1. The 484-bed hospital's case volume has grown 8 percent this year, Vice President of Neurosciences and Orthopedics Robyn Morrissey told the NBJ. Saint Thomas Midtown has a team of 25 surgeons performing almost 1,000 spine surgeries annually.

2. The Spine Institute at Saint Thomas Midtown Hospital is designed to improve the patient and visitor experience, with its own check-in desk, a renovated waiting room, private rooms and recovery services, all on the hospital's fifth floor.

3. In conjunction with the institute's opening, the hospital launched a spine surgery navigation program to preoperatively educate patients about their procedures. It's an extension of the initiative in place at the Saint Thomas Joint Replacement Institute, which opened in 2015.

4. Saint Thomas Midtown's parent organization, Nashville-based Ascension Saint Thomas, didn't disclose the institute's cost.
