22 hospitals, health systems expanding orthopedics so far this year

Twenty-two hospitals or health systems expanded or added orthopedics-focused centers in the first quarter of this year:

1. Glens Falls (N.Y.) Hospital opened a suite of surgical offices in early April. Physicians offer array of specialties in the offices including orthopedics.

2. Baptist Health South Florida in South Miami broke ground on a wellness and medical center in Plantation, Fla. The health system is building a 100,000-square-foot center, which will include a spine care clinic.

3. Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser Permanente is building a three-story medical office building in Hesperia, Calif., which will offer orthopedics.

4. Akron (Ohio) Children's Hospital opened the Mansfield (Ohio) Health Center March 26. The 32,400-square-foot facility offers patients access to several specialties including orthopedics.

5. Huntsville (Ala.) Hospital is building a $250 million, seven-story spine and orthopedic tower across from its main hospital.

6. Work on Sioux Falls, S.D.-based Avera Health's orthopedic hospital is progressing. The five-story hospital is part of Avera's $172 million expansion in southwestern Sioux Falls, slated for completion in November.

7. Janesville, Wis.-based Mercyhealth is adding a $5 million orthopedic center to Rockford (Ill.) Memorial Hospital.

8. Warsaw, N.Y.-based Wyoming County Community Hospital will spend $10 million on an expansion adding an outpatient orthopedic clinic.

9. Medical City Dallas purchased a vacant healthcare facility in Dallas. It plans to spend $92 million on it to convert into a heart and spine hospital.

10. Meridian, Conn.-based MidState Medical Center wants to expand its orthopedic presence by adding three new operating rooms, at an expected cost of $26.2 million.

11. Colorado Springs, Colo.-based Penrose-St. Francis Health Services is opening a third hospital in Colorado Springs, which will initially focus on orthopedic services.

12. Middlesex Health opened an orthopedic operating suite at Middlesex Hospital. Both are based in Middletown, Conn.

13. New York City-based Hospital for Special Surgery dedicated the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Complex Joint Reconstruction Center Feb. 12.

14. Construction is underway on Huntsville (Ala.) Hospital's Orthopedic and Spine Tower. Scheduled to open in 2021, the building will include large presurgical and postsurgical recovery areas. It will also house Huntsville Hospital's Joint Camp program for joint replacement patients.

15. New Hyde Park, N.Y.-based Northwell Health opened its $13.5 million orthopedic hospital at Long Island Jewish Valley Stream in North Valley Stream, N.Y., in February.

16. Ewa Beach, Hawaii-based The Queen's Medical Center West Oahu will implement orthopedic and spine programs as part of the hospital's renovation project.

17. Dayton (Ohio) Children's Hospital is now providing pediatric orthopedic services at its new outpatient care center in Troy, Ohio.

18. Construction on the newest 100,000-square-foot Rush Oak Brook (Ill.) Orthopaedic Center is finished. The project was a joint venture between Rush University Medical Center and Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush, both based in Chicago.

19. Hutchinson (Kan.) Regional Medical Center is planning to open a new orthopedic facility. Hutchinson Regional Medical Center will house the new orthopedic unit on the hospital's third floor. Renovations of the 18-room ward are expected to be complete in August.

20. Roanoke, Va.-based Carilion Clinic opened a new orthopedic clinic in Pearisburg, Va.

21. Gooding, Idaho-based North Canyon Medical Center launched an orthopedic clinic in Twin Falls, Idaho.

22. Regional Health Rapid City (S.D.) Hospital unveiled its new Orthopedic & Specialty Hospital and Sports Performance Institute in Rapid City.
