100+ nurses picket outside McLaren orthopedic, teaching hospitals

More than 100 nurses rallied outside McLaren Health Care facilities on June 27 over staffing issues and care affordability, according to the City Pulse.

McLaren Health Care is headquartered in Grand Blanc, Mich.

Around 20 nurses picketed outside McLaren Orthopedic Hospital in Lansing, Mich., and an additional 100 demonstrated outside the nearby McLaren Greater Lansing hospital.

The nurses have been working without a contract for nearly a year. Several said that because of understaffing, they're asked to come in on their days off or work 16-hour days.

The picketing nurses also criticized the annual raises they've been offered, saying the 1 to 2 percent increases won't cover the deductibles and copayments they'll be responsible for under a new healthcare package.

"McLaren is committed to working with the union to reach a fair and competitive contract for the nurses," hospital officials said in a statement to City Pulse.
