More Surgeons Use da Vinci Robots, But Are They Better Than Humans Alone?

While the use of the da Vinci Surgical System has quadrupled over the last four years, there is no clear evidence that its outcomes are better than those of surgeons without robotic technology, according to a Los Angeles Times report.

Marty Makary, MD, a surgeon at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, has said the da Vinci robot is a tool more for marketing than for clinical care. He also said the benefits of robotic surgery, which is done laparoscopically, mirror those of laparoscopic surgery that does not use robots.

However, the robotic system may provide unique advantages to surgeons. Hyung Kim, MD, a urologist at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, said while there is no definitive answer on the robot's performance compared to that of humans alone, the da Vinci system is more comfortable and offers a better view of the operating field, according to the report.
