Illinois' Loyola University Medical Center Opens Hybrid OR

Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, Ill., has opened a hybrid operating room, combining the imaging capabilities of a cardiac catheterization lab with that of a conventional OR, according to a hospital news release.

The hybrid OR allows physicians to perform procedures that may require minimally invasive and open-surgery techniques at the same time. Cath labs are used for minimally invasive procedures, while standard ORs are used for more invasive services.

Surgeons will be able to combine two procedures in the hybrid OR. For example, a heart patient may require open surgery to bypass a single clogged coronary artery and less-invasive balloon angioplasties to open up other clogged coronary arteries.
