US News: 10 states hit hardest by opioid crisis

The CDC estimates more than 176,600 Americans died from opioid-related overdoses between 2013-17 — and roughly 25 percent, or 47,600, of those deaths occured in 2017, according to U.S. News & World Report.

During the same period, the opioid death rate was 11.1 deaths per 100,000 people, with a peak of 14.9 deaths occurring in 2017. The crisis has left no state untouched, but has hit some counties harder than others.

The 10 states that had the highest five-year death rates from opioid-related overdoses between 2013-17:

  1. West Virginia — 37.6 deaths per 100,000 people
  2. New Hampshire — 27.2
  3. Ohio — 26.1
  4. Rhode Island — 23
  5. Massachusetts — 22.3
  6. Maryland — 21.4
  7. Kentucky — 20.9
  8. Connecticut — 19.7
  9. Maine — 19.5
  10. New Mexico — 17.7
