Florida, Military Health System to share PDMP data

Jackie Drees -

Florida's prescription drug monitoring program is now sharing data with the Military Health System's PDMP in a move that will help expand care providers' access to military members' medication histories.

Florida's PDMP is powered by Appriss Health, which uses its PMP Gateway service to integrate PDMP data into EHR systems across the state. Appriss Health partnered with the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy to allow Florida's PDMP and 50 other PDMPs to share interstate data. Appriss Health also works with pharmacy benefits manager Express Scripts.

Falls Church, Va.-based MHS' PDMP supports safe prescribing of controlled substances to patients and allows data sharing between military treatment facilities and non-military healthcare providers. With the program, community-based prescribers at clinics, hospitals and local pharmacies can determine whether another prescriber prescribed a medication to their patient, including individuals at military treatment facilities.

Through the partnership with Appriss Health, MHS will be able to share similar prescription medication information from military treatment facility pharmacies with non-military providers.

With more than 92,000 active and reserve members in the state, Florida has the fifth largest population of military personnel in the country, said Rep. Cary Pigman, R-Fla., according to the news release. Mr. Pigman is an emergency medicine physician and vice chairman of the House of Representatives Health and Human Services Committee.

"It's vitally important for clinicians and other personnel to have a complete picture of prescribing information for service men and women to help combat the potential risk of prescription drug misuse and addiction," Mr. Pigman said. "With more than 100,000 healthcare providers in Florida using [the state's PDMP], the ability to search the Military Health System PDMP will help protect and save more lives."
