American Heart Association offers online classes on caring for opioid OD victims

Harrison Cook -

The American Heart Association is offering two online courses for health professionals and lay people on providing care and treatment for opioid overdose victims, reports the Macomb (Michigan) Daily.

The bystander course will teach how to treat someone suffering an opioid overdose, including using CPR and opioid reversal agents. The course for health professionals includes details about opioid use disorder, the epidemic and therapies.

"The American Heart Association is stepping into this crisis and filling the need in standardized education for healthcare professionals," said Eduardo Sanchez, MD, the association's chief medical officer for prevention. "Arming as many people as possible with up-to-date, practical knowledge on what to do — both immediately and as follow-up — is imperative to saving lives and improving outcomes."
