Diabetes lowers survival chances in some blood cancer patients

Patients who have multiple myeloma and also diabetes are at an increased risk of lower survival rates, but new research shows this differs by race.

The study, published Sept. 29 in the journal Blood Advances, analyzed health records of 5,300 patients with multiple myeloma — 15 percent of which had also been diagnosed with diabetes.

"What we did not expect to see here was that diabetes was actually associated with worse survival outcomes among white individuals with myeloma, but not Black individuals," Urvi Shah, MD, multiple myeloma specialist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, told U.S. News in an Oct. 2 report.

Study authors claim this is the first study of its kind to evaluate patient outcomes by race as it relates to multiple myeloma and diabetes.
