Couple donates $1M for Virginia cancer center

A couple in Roanoke, Va. has donated $1 million to build the city's Carilion Cancer Center, WSLS 10 reported Aug. 18.

The building of the cancer center, announced in 2019, has been delayed due to COVID-19, and Bill and Shireen Kirk's August donation will help get the project back on track, according to the report.

Ralph Alee, Carilion's vice president of philanthropy, said an architect has been hired for the project.

"My wife and I have both lost our mothers to cancer, ultimately, so it impacted our lives," Mr. Kirk told WSLS 10. "We have world-class healthcare here, and I think this cancer center is a way for the hospital to bring some of that world-class care here."
