6 breast cancer updates

Here are six breast cancer studies, grants and patient care stories Becker's covered since Sept. 20.

Studies:

  1. A national survey conducted by Orlando Health Cancer Institute found only 43 percent of women know their family history of breast cancer, and only 32 percent know their individual risk factors for cancer.
  2. An unhealthy gut can trigger changes in breast tissue, leading to breast cancer metastasis, research by UVA Cancer Center found.

Grants:

  1. The National Cancer Institute, part of the National Institutes of Health, awarded researchers at the Montefiore Einstein Cancer Center a five-year, $10 million grant to investigate the mechanisms regulating cancer cells that seed tumors in the lungs, where breast cancer metastasis often occurs.
  2. Charleston, S.C.-based MUSC Hollings Cancer Center researcher Dr. Wenjian Gan received two grants totaling more than $2 million for breast cancer research.

Patient care:

  1. Genetic tests can provide important medical information and help patients choose appropriate treatments for breast cancer, but some genetic tests provide no significant information, leaving patients confused and anxious, according to an article from Kaiser Health News published by CBS News.
  2. The FDA is warning healthcare providers about a rare, potential risk for certain cancers in the scar tissue that grows around breast implants.
